Cinnamon Lakeside lends a hand for coastal clean-up

Associates of the Engineering department of Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, recently joined hands to contribute towards the cleaning of the strip of beach from Wellawatta to Dehiwala. The event on the 7th of September 2013, was participated by over 40 associates as well as General Manager, Denis Gruhier who all spent a large part of the day gathering and disposing debris that has increasingly become a hazard in the area. Sri Lankan beaches are patronized by tourists from around the world. However, Colombo’s beaches have been less favored than those in other parts of the country due to the rapid increase in pollution and disposal of waste material.

Beach clean ups can have a major implication on the health of oceans for generations to come. When garbage enters the ocean, marine life may mistake it for sources of food which could result in detrimental consequences. The responsibility of making beaches healthier and safer for marine wildlife thus remains in the hands of the public, who should clean up after themselves and ensure that no pollutants are left behind. Aiding this process, associates of Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo also took it upon themselves to place placards around the beach clean-up area, reminding the general public of the importance of protecting the environment.

Whether we live on a beach or hundreds of miles from the coastline, we all have a profound stake in an ocean that is healthy and abundant. The ocean sustains us with the basic elements of life by producing half of the oxygen in the air we breathe and being an essential part of the water cycle, helping to provide the water we drink. Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo together with its parent company John Keells Holdings PLC, believe in leading by example and continuously strive to maintain its position as a responsible corporate citizen. The John Keells Leisure sector pledge, ‘I Will Be Green’ extends to all associates who conduct sustainable and responsible practices in their daily lives.

Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo also holds the longest running Green Globe certification record in Sri Lanka. This year, the hotel was awarded the prestigious certification recognized for its initiatives to save energy and water resources, reduce operational costs, positively contribute to local communities and its environment whilst meeting the high expectations of green leisure and business travelers.
